HIT Student
« on: November 23, 2012, 01:05:11 PM »
Hi, I am an HIT student looking ot graduate in the spring 2013.  I recently took a job as a front office clerk for a busy ENT office.  I have never worked in a medical office before and wondered if anyone has any advice about the position in the office or future employment in the heath information field, coding and billing, etc.  Thanks in advance

Be nice, be nice, be nice.

Don't talk religion or politics with the patients and NEVER talk about the boss or their spouse, there are ears everywhere!

If you don't know the answer to a question, the answer is "I don't know the answer to that, but I'll find out for you".

Defer to the doctor or manager when someone insists that they need to be squeezed in.  Find out what length of time the appointments take, and fit them where you can.  The scheduled patients take precedence as they took the time to schedule.  Walk ins will have to wait until the schedule permits (unless your doctor or manager handles it differently).

Don't eat garlic or really smelly food for lunch!  (ha ha)  You may not smell it, but everyone else in the office will!  And keep some mints handy for the patients or staff who do!

And last but not least.....Most offices are small, an ENT office will be dealing with LOTS of patients with allergies so NO perfume!!!!!! Your soap, deodorant, hairspray etc is enough, NO PERFUME!!!!!

The front desk person can make or break a practice.  If patients don't like you they WILL tell the doctor.  If you're pleasant on the phone and in the office it's HUGE!!!  It's a far more important job than most people realize!  GOOD LUCK TO YOU!!!!!

Because you're the manager!  That's a whole different set of rules.  Other than don't eat garlic when meeting with clients!  Fridays and Saturdays are garlic fests at my house because we don't get it through the week!
