Billing on a Second Surgery

Medical Billing In Texas:
On May 27th I went to the ER to have abdominal pain checked out. It was diagnosed as a Complex bleeding cyst on my ovary. I went to my Dr to start a plan of action. We arranged for surgery. I advised my doctor that if there was anything wrong with my ovary to remove it to prevent any further complications.

I had a same day surgery on the 23rd of June pm for the complex bleeding cyst removal. When the surgery started they found that it was a complex cyst and my ovary was bleeding; not the cyst. Also during this surgery I was diagnosed with Endometriosis. My doctor removed all the Endometriosis and cyst and cauterized the bleeding part of my ovary.  They keep me over night.

On June 24th I was still in the hospital as the surgery was longer than expected and they wanted to keep me for observation. While still in the hospital I was unable to keep any type of liquid or medicines down. My blood levels dropped and at that time they did a CT scan (11 pm to Midnight) and found that I had internal bleeding. At this point they called my Doctor back to the hospital.

On June 25th early am; they pulled me back for a second surgery to find the source of the bleeding. They first had to do a blood transfusion on me as my level was too low to do the surgery. Once the transfusion was complete that carried out a second surgery on me where they went in and removed my right ovary as it had ripped again and was the source of the bleeding.

Should I be billed for the CT Scans on the 24th and for the surgery and transfusion on the 25th?

I'm guessing that you are wondering if you should be billed because you believe that the dr should have removed the ovary in the first surgery?  Just not sure I know what your thinking is.  If it is because you feel he should have removed it in the first surgery then there is no way anyone could answer that without the op notes.  However, based solely on what you are describing below it sounds as if he believed that the ovary was ok or he wouldn't have left it in during the first surgery.  Not all physicians are the best of citizens but most are truly looking out for the well being of their patient.  There are not many drs that would purposely leave the ovary knowing that they would have to go back in to remove it sometime later, hoping to collect on two surgeries.  They had to do another CT scan because it could have been a completely different reason for the problem the next day.

Sorry for what you had to go thru, but that's JMO.

Hello Michele,
Thank you for your below response and help. I am just confused as to why my Doctor did not bill me and the hospital did not bill me; just the anesthesiologist is the only one that is billing me for the second surgery. All the other doctors and hospital did not charge me.

I will call them again.

Thank you.
