How long do you have to keep emails? Is there a certain time period that you keep or it is recommended that you keep emails for active and inactive clients?

Depends, if you are using email encryption and have PHI stored on them, most encryption services come with auto backup/archive. I know mine does but I don't use email for PHI on my computer, goes through email system on client side. If you are just talking about email within outlook that doesn't contain PHI or non secure transaction, you can ditch them. Some billers receive their encounters via email system, so it really depends on what you use email for. Be careful of emails sent that have patient names, or account numbers, anything that would identify a patient. Again, I do NOT have email sent to MY actual computer from any client. The only time a client uses my email is for anything NOT related to any particular patient.
