« on: July 21, 2009, 11:42:23 AM »
Do you have any suggestions on a good medical software that I can purchase to start up my at home medical billing service?

Thanks for any information.

Hi,
There are several, but I will tell you about OfficeAlly. It is a good "FREE" software you can use until you are able to afford the other software programs you want to invest in. There is a charge of 19.95 a month if 50% of your claims are Medicare. I like it, its cost-effective. (free). I will probably change once my business progresses, but personally. I just don't have the income to pay the fees until I get a lucrative provider.

Also FYI..when shopping, do a good thorough investigation of each one. I personally wouldn't purchase any software that you cant get  a free demo of. Not just one showing screenshots, but one you can actually maneuver around in and see how user friendly it is.

It is hard to suggest a software without knowing a little more about what you are looking to do.  How many clients are you looking to get?  Are you planning on specializing in any one area?

Without knowing that, I would recommend that you consider whether you want a web based program or a server based program.  We used a server based one for the first 15 years, but recently switched to a webbased program.  Personally I am now completely sold on the web based as they are able to keep up with technology easier than the server based, and they offer more in my opinion.  We used Lytec for 15 years, and it served us well.  We switched to Xena which I am in love with.  It is currently still in the Beta phase and will be available September 15th.  If you would like more info on the Xena you can email me at michele-solutions@cnymail.com.

I agree, you really should know what your goals are. One thing I really regret is having had to have switched software so many times. I wish I had done MORE research in the beginning and knew all the consequences of switching.. Doing it right the first time IMO is the most efficient and cost effective way to starting out.
Data conversions are not only expensive but they are very time consuming and it's not a cost you can pass on to your clients.

I agree, but coming from a new service, I totally understand the need to keep cost down. Most people starting out don't get the downpour of clients that they want. It can happen in a day, or it can be months-year(s). Many of the software providers have charges that they bill you monthly just for the software, whether it is web or server based. Then you are paying for the addition of each provider. I don't endorse any product because it does vary by the need of each service. I will tell beginners about OfficeAlly because it truly is free and it is something anyone can use when they start out. Just as i know I will probably upgrade to a better product, I can't afford to have one "waiting" on providers to sign up with me. I also spoke to a couple of companies that WONT deal with new billing services. You must be established, and you must have a over 12 providers in order to use their software. I don't have any stock in officeally, nor do I get any kickback from referring them. Unless she already has providers, I am sure she is trying to keep her cost down.

Charlene, I agree with you in the "short run" however as someone who's been through conversions it's NOT cost effective in the long run, remember that time is money. Now if someone plans to remain small and can get by with a cheaper solution than I can understand..but I've had to learn the hard way that if you do it right the first time around it's MUCH more cost-effective and productive.

I would have to see and talk to these companies to believe that, I think someone handed you some blarney. I know billing companies who started out with software costing over 10K with just one or two clients and there are quite a few really good high end softwares you can use that you'll never have to switch.

Linda,
I will forward you the companies, because it very well could be a rep that didn't want to service me as "brand New". Once I told him that I had no providers, he quickly told me that I had to be established and had to have xx providers before they would work with me.

I do recognize the issues with conversions. For me its not about starting small, but about being cost-conscious. I currently have Office Ally, but no provider now that I use it for. I log in remotely for a pediatrician since he wants everything on his system. Its fine with me because its a new small practice that could lead to more business. I practice with the software, load my preferences and can practice with no cost to me. Tomorrow I could sign 3 providers. My start-up fee itself would cover me using one of the other web-based programs that I have considered using. I have 3 providers, and I can relatively afford to purchase something better. Now, I can get 1 provider and stay with the free software and a couple of months later get 4 providers. Wow!! I only have to covert for 1 provider!!

I agree with you. I prefer a software program (me personally web based) that can keep up with the times. Get one and deal with that totally, but until I am on my feet....I have to JMO keep cost at a minimal.

***FYI, just got a call about a big practice ***

It does happen everyone Keep marketing and keep pushing!!

It's possible you got in touch with a vendor for a particular server side software with installation and management.. THAT i can understand them not wanting to work with small companies.

As for working on the clients software..YES I AM WITH YOU 100%!!  Right now I'm working with 2 clients that were SOLD on that alone, in fact it was a deal breaker. They did not want to switch and they wanted to stay in control. I use LogMeIN for one office and the other is on their own VPN
My entire marketing campaign this time is built around diversity in the fact that I can work on virtually any system.
