EpiPen training
« on: December 18, 2012, 03:12:29 PM »
Hi,

I work in a pediatric office. We had a mother come in yesterday to see our nurse to learn about how to administer EpiPen to her children. The children are both patients here but did not come in with her because they are too young to administer to themselves. The nurse spent about 15-20 minutes with mom, verbally instructed her on proper use, provided handouts and a DVD to watch and information on teaching the daycare/schools.

Can we bill for this?

Well, since the children were not present I do not believe a nurse visit or E&M is appropriate.  But there is a code, 97535 for training.  Not sure if it would be covered as it is considered a therapy code, and again, the children were not present.

Maybe bill with mom as patient?

Anyone experience this?

I'm thinking if that educational stuff is included with the product (which it is from the website) that it can't be billed for as it's probably built into the costs? My pediatrician doesn't charge extra for that but his NP will do it after he's done with patient and/or parent.
