Using 344.00 when DX is Incomplete SCI
« on: February 09, 2010, 01:23:36 PM »
Hi all,

Is it ok to bill using 344.00 when the verbage on the documentation states Incomplete Spinal Cord Injury?

I work for a DME company.  We get the RX from drs who we do not work for; only based on referals.  We do not code for these doctors, they are to provide us the correct DX code.  I think this request is incorrect and I should ask for a 805. and up code to bill when the verbage says ISCI.  Am I wrong?  Can I bill it this way?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! ;D

I'm a little confused.  The 344.00 is quadriplegia, doesn't seem the same as incomplete spinal cord injury.  However, in your position you are to use the dx sent over on the script right?  You don't have the patient's chart, history, etc.  Or are you saying they wrote 344.00 and incomplete spinal cord injury on the script.

Sorry, hope I'm not reading too much into it!

Hi Michele,

You read it just right!  We are given nothing but a RX where the Dr or his office decides what the actual DX code is.  We are given nothing else to help us code the claim correctly.  This particular dr is giving me a hard time in making the coding correction.  He coded the RX as 344.00 as Incomplete SCI and wants us to file a claim with the patients insurance company.  The dr is saying that that code can be used as it is related to a ISCI.  It doesnt seem right to me so I appreciate your input!

Should i request a correction or just bill with the incorrect code?

Well, if you questioned it with the dr, and he says it's correct, I would bill it as is, since that is the documentation that you have and you confirmed it.
