Phone consultations
« on: April 30, 2009, 01:12:49 PM »
Good Morning, I have a question i was wondering if my Dr. talks to a patient over the phone and then documents it in the chart can we get paid for this. I know in the past we would bill out an office visit of a 99212 and get paid and not have the patient pay for the copay. Is their another cpt we should be billing for.

I don't think it was ever ok to bill out a 99212 for a phone consult?  There are phone consult CPT's I believe but it depends on the reason for the call. Check your 2008 or 2009 CPT code I know the codes are fairly new. They would be under telemedicine or telehealth. As for it being covered, depends on the carrier. You should verify with them whether it's paid or not.

It's also not ok to bill the insurance but not charge the copay.  If the insurance carrier finds out they can terminate the provider from participating.  Try looking at cpt codes 99441-99443.

True...I have had providers do phone consults and we always informed they, that they would be receiving a consultation and we would be billing insurance and their standard benefits applied.
