: Can the CMS 1500 form be filled in by hand and do I have to submit electronicaly
: renewe August 20, 2008, 05:51:16 AM
I am an RN whose husband is a plastic surgeon, he wants to do his own billing (that would be me) I purchased your book and intend on taking a course.  He doesn't  have that much to bill because he is primarily cash.  So can I fill out the form by hand and just mail it for now?  I am flying by the seat of my pants any help in direction is greatly appreciated.

Hi,
Well, if it makes you feel any better you are not alone out there.  Many wives of doctors find themselves in your position.  In fact, once we did a marketing by sending out letters, the first sentence was "Is your wife tired of doing your billing?"  We actually got a pretty good response on that one!

Anyway,
You can try to fill them out by hand, but you need to print extremely neat.  Some of the insurance carriers may not accept them handwritten.  Most carriers have an OCR scanner which scans the claims into the system, which is why you need to print so neatly.  Your claims may slide thru if neat enough.  The CMS book should help you with knowing which fields to fill out.

ALso, you can purchase what's call a 'fill and print' software which is basically what it says.  You fill in the CMS form on the screen and print it out.  They are very inexpensive.  They vary from $100-$200.  Here is a link for a fill and print that we recommend.  Click on the following link & click on the box near the top of the page, middle that states "More information on Speedy Soft Speedy Claim
Fill and Print Software" and you can read about the fill and print.

The only problem with the fill and print is that there is no tracking system, but you wouldn't have that if you are hand writing them either, so you just have to have another way to track whether they are paid or not.  You don't want to let any go unpaid.  Claims don't always get paid on the first submission.  Sometimes you will need to send them in again.

Good luck and feel free to post any other questions!  :)
