anesthesia modifier
« on: July 24, 2012, 04:58:13 PM »
Tina was to be operated on for appendectomy.  Local anesthesia was applied to the affected part. During the surgery, the surgeons discovered that the infection had spread to a larger area. To attend to the other portions, they decided to administer general anesthesia. I cannot figure out how to code this. Can anyone give me ideas as to what the CPT code and modifier would be? Anyone have any scenarios for this topic? Thanks!

This question has been around for a long time and it seems to be from a class. Plus the fact it states local anesthesia then moving on to general for an appendectomy which I've never heard anyone doing.

Yeah I noticed that too. I don't think it's wise at all to post questions from a test/exam to a public forum, you are better off researching answers on your own.

Thanks guys!  I missed that.  I thought it was an odd question.  I've done anesthesia billing but haven't come across that!
