A hospital has recently contacted me to do some of their billing for a locum ob/gyn. The towns only other ob/gyn was on vacation. He has his own practice and is not an employee of the hospital.
The locum has a contract through her staffing company that she can not bill the insurance companies for her deliveries. How should this billing be done? Who would be considered the Billing provider? This would have been much easier if the local OB/Gyn hired the locum to cover in his absence but he did not. The hospital did. We have many deliveries for the last month that no one has billed for. The locum doctor is contracted with medi-cal and that is what most of the deliveries are? Can she bill for these and just reimburse the hospital? Confusing.

This is a very messy situation. I can't even comment on what should be done. I'm mostly confused by the contract with the staffing company to not bill for deliveries. Isn't that a big part of what OB/GYN's do??? ???

The reason the locum can not bill is because she is paid a flat rate by the company to serve any ob/gyn needs that come to the hospital. The dr. that hires the locum to cover for him usually gets to bill for services provided by the locum.
In this situation it is the hospital that has hired the locum. Not a physician.
