Medicare Billing Limitations- mental health
« on: March 21, 2016, 06:04:22 PM »
Does medicare have limitations as to how many times per week a patient can get psychotherapy? I know authorization is not required. From everything I've read, I say no.....but must be able to provide notes proving medical necessity if asked. Anyone know for sure? Thanks.

We see alot of Medicare patients for psychotherapy.  I have never had an issue with any amount of visits per week and/or per year.

There is no administrative limit, just can not be seen more than once per day. If you are seeing a patient more than once a week, you might raise questions but there is really no limit. Just make sure that the medical record is documented to indicate the need for more than one session a week. CYA.
