Anesthesiologist office billing
« on: November 15, 2008, 10:29:55 PM »
I am an anesthesiologist who has no billing experience.  I am planning to start doing some office based anesthesia in a pain clinic one day per month and want to do my own billing.  Can I do paper billing?  Is there basic, uncomplicated, inexpensive software you would recommend to do electronic billing?

Hi,
Some companies will still accept paper claims, but several are mandating electronic billing.  I'm not sure what part of the country you're in but most Medicare's do not allow paper claims anymore.

There is nothing uncomplicated about submitting electronically.  We are actually working with a software company to make an online service available for providers who have a small practice or only bill out a small number of claims, and want to do it themselves.  This would have electronic capabilities.

You need to be careful how inexpensive you go, because if you are billing yourself you will need to be able to track everything as well.  You want to make sure you are paid for all claims, and for all services.  You will want your software to be able to keep track of this stuff.

With the risk of sounding like a billing service, you may want to consider having someone do it for you.  There really is a lot more involved than you realize.  I've seen many dr's try but it really doesn't make sense.  The amount of time it takes them, in addition to the costs for the software, computer equipment, printer, postage, and any money that is lost due to claims being denied, it would have made more sense to have someone do it for them.  And that doesn't cover the time spent on the phone with insurance carriers when problems come up.

Now that the commercial is over, you can purchase fill and print software very inexpensively, but that won't do electronic billing and it doesn't have reporting capabilities to print out insurance aging reports, etc.  I'm afraid if you do want to bill yourself, there is going to be pretty good up front cost to get set up.

Good luck in whichever way you decide to go.
