Medicare/Medicaid should cross over, if it doesn't the patient needs to have this resolved, but yes they will take paper claim but you will need the Medicare EOB to attach to the claim.

Some Medicare carriers require electronic claims for both primary & secondary claims, so it depends on your carrier.  If you submit the claim on paper, like Linda said you need to attach a copy of the primary eob.

swamy: Medicare insurance itself secondary for the patient, and some other commercial insurances are Primary Insurance. In this is i don't think so cross over will happen from commercial insurnaces to Medicare.

Swamy: is it possible to get list of carriers that accepts the paper claims, and which carrier will not accept.

I am very happy to see response very quickly, thank you Michele and Linda, your helping services are never forgetable. thank you

Do you mean the Primary's EOB? I think he is asking if Medicare will accept a paper claim when they are secondary.

Yeah, I guess I had not had my coffee yet, I don't know where i got Medicaid from and I totally missed Medicare as secondary..
Yes Medicare will take paper secondary claims but you will need the EOB still.

As for what carriers accept electronic claims.. with the exception of some small TPA's, WC, PI most all have the capability of receiving electronic claims. Most of the insurance cards out there will tell you and even include the payor ID. There is also a book out there called Insurance Directory Handbook and I believe they update every 1-3 years, it has contact addresses, claims addresses, plan's, etc, it's pretty handy, my edition is a few years old I think.

Most Medicare carriers are requiring that claims be submitted electronically, even if Medicare is secondary. If you are not capable of submitting your claims electronically you can apply for a waiver. An office with less than 10 full time employees can obtain a waiver granting them permission to file on paper. The CMS requires you to obtain a waiver certificate “demonstrating extraordinary circumstances”. If accepted by Medicare, they can then file claims on paper. If you do not qualify for the waiver then you must find a method to submit your claims electronically.

Thanks,
Amit

How do you submit a copy of the EOB along with your claim when Medicare is secondary? We can bill Medicare electronically but am unsure as to how we could get the EOB to go with the claim....

If you are billing it electronically then you don't attach the eob, you submit all the info on the electronic claim.
