Patient billing
« on: December 23, 2008, 12:44:27 AM »
Can anyone share a sample of a patient billing statement?  Is this service included in full service billing?  Who is responsible for mailing those statements out?  If it is the biller, who pays for postage?  Where do payments from patients go to, the biller or the provider?

Thanks so much for your help!

We consider the patient billing part of a full service billing.  We don't do patient billing for all of our providers, it is decided usually when we meet to discuss our service.  If we do the patient billing, we are responsible for sending out the bills, the postage, envelopes, etc.  The payments are sent to where ever we had agreed upon with the provider.  Some of our providers payments come here, some go to them and they give us a copy.

Thank you, Michele.  Is there a patient billing template that you can share?  Also when determining your fee, what would be your parameters for full service billing?  I know some of the standards are setting up the practice on your software by entering patient demographics, submitting claims electronically/paper, posting payments...Is insurance verification among the standards and patient billing or do you charge extra for those?

Any idea what is the going % rate in the midwest?  I live in Columbus, Ohio.  I am so tempted to call up some medical billing centers here locally, but I am a competition so didn't feel like doing it.

Thanks

Beth

I don't have a template.  My software gives me a couple different options on format for patient statements.  I can't really send you one - HIPAA.  We charge either a flat monthly fee, or more commonly a percentage of what we collect.  The percentage is the same, whether we do patient billing or not.  We do not offer insurance verification.  Since we are doing the billing after the services were rendered this isn't really applicable.

We are in New York.  We also tried to contact local services when we started.  Bad Idea.  For some reason many services, especially local ones, seem to feel that it isn't good to share or help others.  That is one of the main reasons we started this forum.  There is enough business for the good services, and we can help each other out along the way.

Here in NY the average is between 6-9%.  It seems to depend partly on how good the service is and partly on the types of providers they bill for.

I hope that helps you out.

Michele, for a single-physician practice, about how many bills do you send out to patients on a monthly basis?  I just want to get a feel of the postage, envelopes, etc. expense.

Thank you, Michele, for all your help!

It really can vary alot depending on the provider and his/her specialty but I would say between 50-75 per month.
