I have a mental health provider (clinical psychologist) that has done some testing and wants me to bill the personality testing under mental health and the neuropsych under medical. She wants me to convert the diagnosis codes used for the personality testing to medical diagnosis.

These are the mental health diagnosis:
302.9
309.4
301.9

I found a 'convert' website
http://www.apapracticecentral.org/reimbursement/billing/dsmiv-to-icd9cm-codes-chart.pdf

Is that what I am trying to do? Convert from DSM-IV to ICD-9-CM?

Or is there a different conversion I need to do?

Thank you,
Barbara

i bill those dx codes often.  when it comes to the testing, she is a psychologist and if she is a par with insurance, she bills the claim as mental health.  the insurance, if par, should have her listed as mental health provider.

She's only going to be able to bill those as "mental health".   Are you saying the provider used the DSM and you need to make sure they correspond to the right ICD9?  If so than yes.. you can use that link. I had my mental health clients ditch their DSM's for that reason. I don't do the coding, won't even convert them, they know they have to use the ICD-9 as there are many of the DSM codes that Medicare will reject.   Now if she's wanting to bypass the mental health lowered reimbursement that most plans have she can't.

Okay I think I understand a little more now. We will be billing everything under mental health with UBH. But for some reason she thinks she can use the dx codes from the DSM for the billing that falls under personality testing and she wants me to use codes that reflect a medical diagnosis for cpt codes 96118. I have sent her an email of my understanding of what she would like me to do and am waiting for her reply on this.
