: Resources to learn credentialing
: Sam811 February 16, 2016, 10:39:54 AM
Hello,

My name is Sam and I'm new to this forum, so far it has been a great resource for me. I am in the process of starting my business and I have a question about credentialing. I have 8 years of health care experience half of which have been health care administration dealing with insurances etc. I am familiar with credentialing but I want to learn more as it is a service that I want to provide. Any resources or books available were I can learn credentialing and how to do it correctly. Thanks

Unfortunately there are NO courses/instruction to teach credentialing.. and if there were or you came across them, I'd have to question them. I think this is a service that you can provide that really is based on experience and knowledge of the industry as a whole. There are also various tiers to credentialing that many overlook when offering it to a potential client. Some offer straight credentialing, but if you have the experience and know how you can take it to the next level which includes fee-schedule negotiation, contract negotiation, etc.

An idea that's working out well for me regarding credentialing, is offering to do some pro bono credentialing work for my existing billing clients. There is no substitute for experience, and the only way to get that experience is to dive in and start doing it. I've learned a lot this way, and in the next 6 months or so, feel I'll have enough knowledge on the subject to start offering it as part of the services I charge for.
