working from home
« on: October 09, 2017, 05:43:22 PM »
I have been in the medical billing profession for the last 15+ years. I am looking to start working from home.  Not sure if I want to work for someone or work for myself.  Does anyone have any information, on which is the best option. I am located in PA, and very educated on different systems. If anyone is looking for a full/part time biller, please let me know.  Thanks in advance.  All opinions are welcome.

There is really no savings for a provider to hire a biller to work from home and in fact it actually would cost them more financially and in liability. With that said if you have the resources to start your own business that would be a better way to go.

I have blog post that might help explain the differences http://billerswebsite.com/medicalbillingblog/?p=131

With your experience and having had worked on various systems you can also keep your startup and overhead costs down by utilizing the clients system which many billing companies are now doing. Many years ago many billing companies (including myself) thought the only option was to spend thousands of dollars starting up, that's really not true anymore, especially if you have experience.

I agree with Linda that it would be better for you to work for yourself.  However, I have seen several offices that have PMS systems with online access and they have allowed their billers to work from home.  But we just took over for one of those situations because the biller was taking advantage of the provider and charging for more hours than she was actually working.  With today's technology it is possible for people to work remotely.  HOWEVER as a boss, I do not hire people to work remotely for that reason and others.

I think if your intention is definitely to work at home it would be best for you to have your own business.

Many don't understand that it's the employer and work situation also that would determine a 1099 situation or even employee/employer when it comes to IRS regulations either. It's not as easy as the biller just logging in... if this is an "employee" technically the employer (practice) has to provide ALL equipment, materials, etc. If it's a 1099 situation the way the work is controls determines that status and the IRS has a say in how this is handled with the employer. There is just NO benefit for a practice to hire someone to work from home as an employee, there is also a LOT more liability to the practice attached with a remote employee. With hiring a medical billing company/service the company/service maintains their own liability insurance (E/O) and even a 1099 contractor would do the same.

The practice that I was referring to actually did provide the computer, etc.  The biller did work in the office but then had to relocate 45 minutes away due to husband's job.  So instead of letting her go they set her up to continue her work, but remotely.  It worked for them for a while.  Unfortunately not everyone is cut out to work remotely and there is a lot of temptation for abuse.

I agree with Linda though.  If it were up to me I would definitely outsource before I paid someone to work remotely (from the provider's standpoint).  As for a billing service owner, I definitely do not allow workers to work remotely.
