Billing for a Mobile Clinic?
« on: January 22, 2014, 05:43:35 PM »
We are currently an Urgent Care Center - looking to get a mobile unit and see patients at a local college for minor things such as strep tests, flu tests, etc.

The doctor who would be providing service is of course affiliated with our urgent care - my question is what would the POS be?

We have not done this in the past, would the overall billing be the same as we do now?

Thanks for any help!

Interesting question. Assume that the school does not have a clinic for this. Is there a health plan that the school has for these students? Are you contracted? If so, I would call them and ask. I am going to assume it would be the same as the urgent care facility but since I am not sure..please find out and then share with us.

This is per CMS: http://www.cms.gov/Medicare/Coding/place-of-service-codes/Place_of_Service_Code_Set.html

15   Mobile Unit

A facility/unit that moves from place-to-place equipped to provide preventive, screening, diagnostic, and/or treatment services.

(Effective January 1, 2003)

16   Temporary Lodging

A short term accommodation such as a hotel, camp ground, hostel, cruise ship or resort where the patient receives care, and which is not identified by any other POS code.

Hope it helps!

Just to answer some of your questions.  The school does not have a clinic on site -they have a RN for 20 hours a week that basically either gives out meds (aspirin, advil, etc) anything more serious she refers to our UC.

The school itself does not have a health plan they offer - so it really could be any insurance given by the students.  We are contracted with most.

Still looking more into it but if this helps anyone give me further information that would be great!

Procedure codes (and diagnosis of course) would be the same.  Just POS would be different.  Karen's list below is helpful.  I would think the '15' would be appropriate based on what you have stated.  It's kind of like a house call/office visit.  The patient isn't coming in to the office, the dr isn't going to their home, but they are seeing them in a mobile unit, providing the same services that they would in an office.

So my question is..and I don't know the answer..using a different POS from the urgent care center..what do the practitioners have to do. I would think that there would have to be something that they would need to do to support a different POS. (paperwork)

I'm not 100% sure but I don't think that there is any additional paperwork.  I think that some plans will allow for the mobile POS and some won't.

I would love to hear from someone who is sure.   :D
