I landed a contract for a dual location Optometry clinic. The OD was very excited about my services. I did get a little ill feeling from his front office coordinator, and probably because immediately I saw some billing issues. Payments (EFT) were not posted, creating a huge mislead in the outstanding AR. These cases were >120 days old. Anyway he emailed me yesterday about what another provider told him. He said he hates billing services because he had one and they said they billed everyday, but he discovered they did not. I had to reassure him, that although his friend was correct in the fact that there are some shotty billing services, mines is not that way. We should hold some integrity in our work. I took on a new provider in January (terminating her contract today), that I never billed those services before. I was however familiar with NC Medicaid's billing guidelines, and the CapMR/DD program, so I wasn't petrified with it. I did however research many nights about the different HCPCS, CPT's modifiers needed, and the NPI's/taxonomy routing for NC Medicaid. I received good feedback from the LME about how I turned around the providers billing for them. We owe our profession more than just taking on a new client without proper training. We have resources available to help us. When you screw over a provider, you make it hard for the next biller. I see the mess providers have been put in (inhouse/outsource) billers. Just as we want to be paid for our services, we have to make sure we earn the money we charge.

It's kind of like the new girlfriend being treated like crap because the old girlfriend cheated on him.

How true this is.  Your work ethic, the pride you put into your work and maintaining a positive reputation is priceless and helps us all.

Yes it's extremely frustrating to have to try and make up for another company's flaw's! Let me just say one thing though.. I've learned by taking accounts from other billing companies that it's NOT always what it seems and you might only get ONE side of the story. I try to give the benefit of the doubt and at the same time I'm NOT going to jump through hoops to hold the hand of every provider in every situation.. For example. I once got a client who was completely against outsourcing from the beginning.. I knew her receptionist for a while and she had talked this client into at least talking to me. I spent about 2 months "wooing" her and hearing her stories of how the previous billing company "Screwed" her. I assured her I would do everything differently. Well come to find out and I'll spare you the details but it wasn't hard to put 2+2 together with this one and find out this client was absolutely DIFFICULT, Arrogant, Argumentative and felt she was always right, she would refuse to code and demand I do it despite that being in my contract that I don't code, and I would get small remarks like "Well that's why I didn't want the old billing company anymore" it was pretty quick before I realized the previous billing company probably had not done anything wrong (even looking at accounts I could tell they didn't) and this was just a provider I needed to turn loose and I did. I ran up against that situation a few other times ALWAYS extending the benefit of the doubt to the previous company. YES indeed there are some poorly trained and uneducated billing companies out there.. however I don't jump to that conclusion and I'm not going to jump through hoops to reassure a provider they will get THEIR way.   JMO

Just yesterday I happen to get a call from a provider asking about my services, ahead of time right from the caller ID I knew the billing company and they are local to me and have a pretty good reputation. He tried to tell me that they lied to him about not being able to charge a % of collections. Not even 2 min into the conversation I knew he was going to be snowing me. I told him that the billing company he has currently is correct and proceeded to tell him it was to HIS benefit and that it was HIS neck on the line if he was looking for a billing company that bills on %. HE then proceeds to ask me if I would refer him to a billing company that WOULD charge a % of collections... :-\ :-\ :o ??? ??? :-\  Turns out from talking to one of the owners of the other billing company he was behind by 3 months paying them  :o
