NEW TO OBGYN BILLING
« on: February 25, 2010, 09:50:16 PM »
Please help!
I recently applied for a OBGYN billing job. That I thought I could do with proper training from one of the other billers. To my surprise there will be no other biller. That will be me on my own. I was told I would need to learn the program with no one to train me. I have no prior OBGYN Billing experience. Is OBGYN billing very complicated that I will have a hard time? or will I be okay? When I went into Neurology billing I had no experience but some one was there to train me. Should I take the risk since I have been unemployed for quite a while (4 months to be exact) or should I keep looking for something I know I am more familiar with? Very confused. There aren't hardly any jobs in my area.

Thanks

if you have billing experience you should be ok. every specialty has its quirks and things you will have to comprehend. one thing you should do is brush up on the rules for medicaid & medicare for obgyn benefits. this will help you out tremendously.

Good blessings to you

OB-GYN shouldn't be any harder than neurology.  It certainly would be better if they had someone to train you, but use your knowledge from your previous  experience.  Ask if they have any materials you can use to learn from, billing guides, etc.

AND google is your friend. do some searches online, you would be amazed at what you can find. I took on my first mental health billing, and I had to learn ASAP. I spent countless hrs researching the Cap/mr/dd program for NC medicaid which is primarily what they bill. I had some knowledge of the program but specifically with dme, and home health. nc medicaid has a good billing guide online, so that helped me out a lot. it is now a specialty that i market. ironically most of the people i asked about did more psychiatry, and not community support which this falls under. as a medical biller, you have to be someone who can research because something new comes up all the time.

Thank you both so much michele, and pay my claims for the advise. I feel so much better. I am good at reseaching and that is what I enjoy the most learning new things about billing and regulations. As you all know rules change all the time. I went to my second interview and I think it went pretty well.

Thank you again and God Bless!
Katy.
