Hello Everyone,

I'm looking to start my own home based billing service. I wanted to what will be the 1st steps to getting started...??I have taken a Medical Billing course a one year program 2011-2012. I'm currently enrolled in the Certified Billing Program where I will soon sit for the exam to become CBCS. I also work for the hospital system where I deal with the insurance, billing copays etc... so, I have plenty of experience. I just want to know where do I start what are some helpful resources or tools could I use during the process? Alice or Michelle I would like to purchase some of your products to get started which one(s) would be more helpful? I would be starting off as Sole Proprietorship.

Thanks,

Cassandra

Alice and Michelle have some excellent medical billing materials, their coursework on signing up your first doctor, writing a contract, and pricing your services are especially helpful. You can finish your CBCS exam if you wish, but you'll find that your ability to get the job done for your client's will count for much more than any certifications. Once you've read the coursework, go through the posts on this site and read them all, it's the best free education you'll get.

It's wise to lay the groundwork for success the way you are, but building a medical billing business will require determination, so once you've finished your coursework and you're ready to launch your business, please remember: Fortune favors the persistent!!  ;)

  1)  I need recommendation on what comes first having a doctor or first is to have a billing software?

There is no right answer.  Some billing services use the provider's software and work out of their system so depending on how you are going to set up will play into it.  Personally we got our software prior to our first client.  If you want to be able to start immediately you will need to have your set up done.  Clearinghouse connections, etc.  So at the very least you need to know what you are going to do and what you need to do to get that in place.

  2)  Which Billing Software would you recommend for the business.?

There are a TON of different softwares out there.  Again, it depends on you.  Do you want server based or cloud based?  Are you going to do one specialty or multiple?  What is your budget?  We have used Lytec for 24 years and we are very happy.  It is reasonably priced and allows us to do all we need to.

  3)  How do i get across with doctor since most of them have their own PM software 1)why are they still want to outsource their revenue management ?(why didn't they finish it alone with submit click) ? 2)when they have their own PM software how do i get across with their information ?

There is so much more to billing than just submitting the claims.  They need a billing specialist to make sure the claims are being submitted properly, make sure they are being paid properly, handle the rejections, file appeals, collect all that is due, keep up with changes, etc.  Anybody can just submit the claims.  We've seen many offices lose a ton of money because they don't understand how the process works.  Usually when we go into an office we increase their revenue by way more than our fee just by getting them paid for all that they should be paid for.

There are also compliance plans, HIPAA compliance, BAA Agreements, and E/O or quai tam insurance to think about. You'll also want to check with your local govt to find out about any zoning laws that may affect a home office if you plan to have a home office.

PMRNC is an association that has been around since 2000. We have some great resources for those wanting to start their own billing company. We have such tools as a getting started area that helps you choose a business model, check out softwares, tips to creating your contract and compliance plan. We also have an area dedicated just to regulations, pricing your services, HIPAA and many many marketing samples you can utilize.

Of course we also offer ongoing resources such as a consultants corner where you can learn about additional value added services to offer your clients.
