Is it a common practice to ask providers to provide us with online log-ins to insurance carriers in order to check on claims etc?  (Especially because some of the carriers will only give you statuses through their online system)

You can certainly ask them if they already have access, but I find that most don't.  I try to enroll under my billing service so I can check multiple docs under one signin but if that's not possible I will enroll the provider.

I agree with Michelle. I would apply under the billing service so all you have to do is use 1 user ID/PW per provider, but add multiple tax-id numbers

I have online access to United Healthcare and Medicaid, HOWEVER, I would love to be able to check claims status online for BCBS - I have signed up for Availity and for I Exchange with BCBS, but still cannot get status of a claim online.  I bill for out of network providers, so maybe that's the reason and I use a different service for electronic claims other than Availity.  But for United, the providers I bill for are out of network and I still have access - it's extremely helpful.  Can you tell me how I could see BCBS claims online?

Have you signed up for BCBS online access itself??? IN NC we use Blue-E and that gives us claim status, and it doesn't matter if you are in or out of network. Also, when you have access online, it will be for that particular provider you have access 2. I have 2 providers. I have 1 unique ID/PW, but have 2 NPI's that I can check on. Depending on which provider I need to access, I choose that NPI#

Each BC is different.  I have access to BC here in NY, but it will only give me claim status for my PAR providers, not my OON ones.  And it's the OON ones that would be most helpful!

You should call the BCBS provider rep and ask if there is anything you can do to have access to OON claim status just to be sure.

I'm using the EPOS in NY also, you can get access as billing, but it's PER TAX ID of practice and only PAR providers can use it. I used the download form to sign up and sent back for each client.

Wow, well I guess BCBS of NC is excellent since they give us claim status, and we are non-par. I have used other BCBS website and have been able to obtain our claim status reports. Go figure..

thanks for your answers.  I have called BC but will try again - maybe provider rep. but I've found being OON they aren't particularly helpful.

In order to utilize Blue e, providers must have a registered NPI with BCBSNC. And, I use empireblue . It does give the status for OON. But little tricky. You can call BCBS NY rep and ask for assistance. Once you know, easy to use to website.
