Emdeon
« on: December 09, 2010, 12:56:50 AM »
Hi All,
This is a great forum! :D

I have been submitting paper claims for a small PT clinic. Recently my PT ask me to look into web-based electronic claim submission. I am a little confused as I search more on this topic. Can someone please walk me through this industry? Should I buy ??? subscribe monthly ??? or use the free website ???
Website like PostNTrack,  Availity, MD on-line, ClaimsREDI submitter, etc. provide free electronic claim submission, eligibility and benefit check, claim status and remittance....   There are so many web-sites that offer free claim submission, so what is the benefit of purchasing a software or subscribe to Kareo or similar product? How does EDI fit into the picture? I know the definition of EDI but don't know how it works.
Is anyone familiar with  Emdeon ? How is it?

Thank You

Michele

I'm assuming that you have a practice management system and you are looking for a clearinghouse.  If that is accurate, then I would definitely consider some of the free ones first.  We have used both Office Ally & Availity (both free for the most part).  If you submit over 50% claims to government payors (Medicare, Tricare) then there is a charge for Office Ally.  Both work well.  For my system the Office Ally is better and I can submit to almost all payors.  I like their reports.  Haven't used Emedion but if I can get what I need and it works great, why pay?  EDI is the clearinghouse portion of submitting the claims.

Good Luck!  It will seem hard at first because it is new, but it is worth struggling thru.  You will love it once you get it running smoothly.

Are you working as an employee of a practice or on your own as a billing company/contractor, ie; who's paying for it? I only ask because it is a bit worrysome when someone asks what the function of PM software is.. I'm not trying to be harsh..that's why I'm assuming you are working for a practice.  THE PM software is a vital tool to the entire revenue cycle, not only that the reports are vital as it can clear up a lot of unhealthy problems within the practice receivables..  I guess the simple answer to your question is to remember you will get what you pay for. Yes, I know there are a lot of free billing software's out there, but you have to take more into account than the HERE and the NOW, is the doctor new to private practice, are they intending on growing, if the answer is yes than you will want to take a more practical approach because one thing many of us experienced billers will tell you is that there is NO SUCH THING as a seemless or simple "migration" or "conversion" ... so what you use needs to meet your needs NOW and in the future.

yeah, the PT is new to private practice, and I am just a helping friend. Yes, he hopes for a growing business, but as of now he needs more $$ to stabilize the place.

If he is looking to grow than I highly recommend he choose the PM system based on a good growth factor or he will regret it and it will also cost him more money in the long run. I know it's most people's advice to start off with the "free" or low cost..but practially speaking it's NOT a good idea when the provider plans to grow their business.

I have been using Kareo for a while now and love it. They are a PM and the clearinghouse is integrated within in the software so there are no uploads you have to do.

I second that one about Kareo!  The only thing I would say about kareo is that it's NOT a PM system for someone who's never billed with PM software before..their support is "ok" but the don't really get too much into "training" new billers, their focus is more on implementation..but the software/system is great!

I highly recommend Total MD web based (you log on to their server). I think it is an awesome system, for very decent money. It is 99 a month per user. They have awesome reports. They can customize almost any report you need! I wish this is what i would have started out with to begin with. I have used healthfusion, mpm soft, and medisoft. Mpm soft is the worst, I repeat, is the worst! Their customer service is horrible and there is always some kind of issue. Also, the total md has their own clearinghouse too, so there is no extra money there. Good luck in your decision, but i could not be happier with another software.
