BALANCE BILLING
« on: July 26, 2012, 10:15:26 PM »

WE ARE CONTRACTED WITH CIGNA - PATIENT GETS A CAST. CIGNA DENIES STATING PHYSICIAN'S CONTRACT DOES NOT ALLOW THE CPT CODE BILLED. STATES THERE SHOULD BE A WRITE OFF.  I KNOW SOME OFFICES BALANCE BILL THE PATIENT ANYWAY. WHAT IS THE LEGAL PROCESS FOR THIS ? JUST GETTING BACK TO OFFICE BILLING WHICH I HAVE NOT DONE IN A WHILE.

Ellie, I would definitely check the contract first and foremost; also make sure the correct code/POS was used.  Normally when you are you contracted with an insurance company, you can not balance bill the patient.

I would also check your state's law on balance billing, as some states do prohibit this.
