Billing for nebulizer treatment and training
« on: March 01, 2008, 10:05:56 PM »
Question
Hi!  My name is Portia.  I have a billing question from a pediatrician’s office.  I know that DME companies can bill for training when they deliver a nebulizer to a patient.  If a doctor treats a patient in the office with  nebulizer then gives them a nebulizer to take home (from a supply that they have stocked in the office) can they bill for a treatment and then bill separately for training on how to use they nebulizer that they have prescribed and given to the patient?  Thank you.

Answer
Portia,
Each insurance carrier (and each individual insurance plan) has different rules on how claims are processed and what is allowed.  I would certainly recommend that you bill for the training in the situations that you have described.  Just be prepared that it will not always be covered.  I would also recommend considering the 59 modifier which states that the service is distinct and separate from the other services being billed.
Good luck
Michele
