I am considering the possibility of going into medical coding. I have never worked in the medical field. Do coders need to deal with hard-to-read doctors' handwriting? Just the thought of it is quite scary.

Yes, absolutely coders need to go through the medical records and not all doctors use transcription services. You'll also want to have some medical terminology as well.

a lot of docs are using EMR now, so handwriting would not be an issue there. Also operative notes are always typed/computerized so you are ok there too...I would not let the issue of handwriting stop you- coding can be a very lucrative career if you are willing to enter the field at entry level (receptionist/charge poster etc...) good luck!

I agree, many are utilizing EMR however remember NON medicare/Medicaid providers are not, physicians who are older in solo practices are not. I know some who based their opt-out of Medicare on EMR being forced on them along with the ACA. I can't speak on other areas, but where I am.. only one in 10 physicians is utilizing EMR. JMHO
