BCBS not recognizing Global Periods???
« on: March 18, 2008, 02:15:02 PM »
I was told that beginning 01/01/2008, Blue Cross Blue Shield will no longer recognize surgical global periods.  Meaning, a surgery that consists of a global of 90 days will not be referenced by BCBS.  Therefore, postoperative visits will not have to be billed and reimbursement is allowed on E/M services in the "global period".

Considering this is unbelievable, I was needing this information in writing.  Has anyone heard of this???  Is the above information true?  Is the information available on the bcbs website...and if so, where can I locate it?  All help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Hi,
Sorry for the delay in answering.  The forum setup is still new and we're working out some systems.

Anyway in response to your question, I have not heard of such a thing and I too would find it very unbelievable.  Where did you get the information from?  If possible I would go back to that source and find out where the information is in writing.  Second, you could try to contact your BCBS provider rep.  If that is true, they certainly should know about it and be able to give you a source.

Also, what state are you in?

If anyone else has heard of this please let us know!

Thanks
Michele

Hi Brandi,

BCBS of Kansas City, Missouri still recognizes the global periods.  :)
