Hi, I'm Keely and I'm not in the industry but I'm trying to get into it. :) Here's my deal, I'm the office manager for a home health agency and my boss wants me to get certified in billing & coding, which I'm totally open to, as I'll get more hours, pay, etc, but I'm confused as to what kind of training I need and/or what type of certification to obtain and how! Even though my boss is an RN and a very smart lady when it comes to the field of healthcare, she can't tell me exactly what to do either. I've done research and even talked to a few instructors and I know about all the different types like CPC and CPC-H, etc, but none of those seem to suit my needs. Most of our billing is through Medicaid at this time. (I'm a Medical Assistant by trade and have a background in billing & coding however my boss is kind of a stickler about professionalism and credentials and she won't let me handle the billing until I'm certified.) I'm so confused! My goal for the new year is to get this done but where I start?? Does anyone have any advice?? Thank you in advance!

There is NO known national certification for billing. Coding is a separate issue and you will want to look into certification through the AAPC.  For Billing however you will need to research and choose the best program available but again, there is no ONE certification, several organizations, companies do offer billing courses and their own certifications or certificates. This will be a matter of preference and you will want to research which one fits your needs and your employers needs.
