Can will bill codes 99217 and 99219 as outpatient 22?

An observation care discharge service (CPT 99217) is used for patients who were in "observation status" and discharged from the hospital on a day other than the day they were admitted for observation.

Report an initial observation care code (CPT 99218-99220) for encounters with patients while they are in observation status.

Yes - place of service 22 is appropriate for observation services.

No, not 99217, patient WAS in observation status but was then DISCHARGED FROM HOSPITAL

So what place of service do you use for 99217? I thought the place of service should match the patient's status (inpatient or outpatient) in a facility and that observation status was still considered outpatient?

POS 22 is what I use and previous work with other billing services have used 22 as well. Insurance paid...

As long as the patinet was not admitted IP the POS for Ob would be 22.  If the pt was admitted IP on a subsequent date to the Ob then you would use your IP codes with an 21 POS.   A pt. that is Ob has nit been formally admitted this is considered OP
