Where to start?? Medicall Billing Biz. Please help
« on: March 13, 2012, 12:11:44 AM »
Hello Everyone,

This is my very first post and I need your help. I have always wanted to start my own medical billing service. I have done billing for Home Health (4 yrs) ( the lst company I woorked for in 2001 used to gross $50,000 per month) and Anesthesia and Pathology Billing ( for hospital based physicians)- I worked for a large medical billing company.  While at the medical billing company, I handled the entire billing for 8 different accounts that each grossed over  $150,000 per month. I was a great biller. The last time I worked as a biller was in 2005. I would like to get back into the field, because I am a very meticulous and dedicated biller. I did not do any coding work, although I plan on getting my CCS certification i the near future.

So my questions are:
***How can I start the business?? I would like to target EMS, Chiro, Mental Health, DME and Home Health. What book do I need to get the billing procedure codes for  these different specialty.

***Has anyone used the Med Billing in a Box or any of the other products??
***What software/clearing house would you recommended?

Any other advice or tips would be greatly appreciated. Have a great day!!!

Michele

The CPT book will have codes for all specialties, you don't need separate books.

We use Office Ally for our clearinghouse and we are very happy.  They are free (unless you do more than 50% government payers - then there is a small fee).

Chiro is a tough field right now.  DC's are getting hit hard by Medicare with pre-edit audits on 98941's and WC with new regulations.  THey are really struggling.

Good luck!

If you are just starting out, I recommend NOT targeting to any particular specialties. It's ok if you want to eliminate some types of practices (I don't market to any chiropractors what-so-ever), but don't limit yourself or you will have a really hard time getting that first client. Later on if you acquire one or two specialties than it would be OK to specialize.

I also like to tell people starting out.. while it's fine to lean towards a software for your company..REMAIN diversified or you will struggle for clients. By diversified I mean be ready, willing and able to take on a client who does not want to switch software's and wants you to take over from their system or billing program. I can't tell you how many times I've seen billers turn away clients because the client won't move to their PM solution.
