: mental health billing -modifiers
: nancygirl December 01, 2008, 07:23:43 PM
I billed for a psychiatrist and never had to use modifiers. I have a friend who works for a company that bills for social workers, psychologists and psychiatrists. She told me she uses modifiers all the time. Does anyone know the difference in billing methods? Why do you need modifiers, when? Thanks, Nancygirl

We bill for all 3 currently, social workers, psychologists and psychiatrists, and have been for 14 + years.  I have never used a modifier for any of them.  I use modifiers for my other providers all the time, but not on mental health providers.  I would love to know which modifiers she uses, maybe I'm missing something!

Thanks
Michele

Hi, sorry, just saw this post and wanted to comment.  I have billed for LICSW and LMHC for three yeas and I only need to use modifiers when I submit to MBHP for Mass Health.  The modifier I use is HO

I bill mental health and substance abuse and bill modifiers ALL the time. Issue is when people say Mental Health they always think of Psychiatrist, LCSW etc. We billed for Community support, Intensive Home visits, etc etc. those services require modifers.

I have used modifiers for mental health and mostly substance abuse but not "all the time" depends on carrier's requirements
