Code for ER VISIT with Liquid Bandage on Closed Wound

(1/3) > >>

ginamdm:
What would be the proper code for an ER visit with Liquid Bandage applied to closed wound on finger. I am asking this because I wondered if I have been billed correctly. I brought my child in with a 1 inch cut on his finger and they put a liquid bandage on it without scrubbing it because it was already closed. But when I received the bill, it stated code 12001 Simple Closure of Scalp Neck. That doesn't seem right to me. Any info would be appreciated. Thank you.

Michele:
Hi,
The actual description of code 12001 per the AMA is "Simple repair of superficial wounds of scalp, neck, axillae, external genitalia, trunk and/or extremities (including hands and feet); 2.5 cm or less".  The introduction to the section for code 12001 states that the use of the codes in the section to designate wound closure utilizing sutures, staples, or tissue adhesives (eg 2-cyanoacrylate) either singly or in combination with each other, or in combination with adhesive strips.  Wound closure utilizing adhesive strips as the sole repair material should be coded using appropriate E/M codes.

So basically, it sounds as if using the liquid bandaid is appropriate to be billed as a 12001 since it is a tissue adhesive, but not strictly an adhesive strip.

It wouldn't hurt to still call the billing dept to see if they do feel it was coded appropriately.

Good luck,

Michele

Thank you Michelle for helping me to understand this. If you don't mind one more question....do you think it is still appropriate if the wound was already closed? For example, it wasn't an open cut. I just thought that it was an expensive code to use since they just took a bandaid off that i applied at home, looked at it, and then put the liquid bandaid on. I asked the billing dept about it but they haven't replied to me. I don't think they will either. But I thought if I could give them a code that made more sense, I would sound credible and they might reduce my bill.

Thank you again! G
