Client's who have Medicare part A and part B
« on: March 24, 2015, 04:10:36 PM »
Do they use the same member ID number? Since part B is for out patient mental health do I just use their part A number but put a B after it?

I am very new to billing mental health under medicare. Client has a supplemental plan for secondary but I can not get the primary claim to process. Counselor doesn't know the answer to this question.

Service in Florida.

Thank you for your help.

The Medicare number is always their number. Never change it or you will not get paid. The suffix on the end of their number has nothing to do with submitting to Part A and Part B. You can google Medicare HIC suffix to get a list of them and how they are used. For example, if a wife gets benefits under her husbands account her Medicare number would end in a B. This is not just for mental health but for every claim. Also getting a copy of the Medicare card will show you whether they have A and B benefits.

Are you getting denials from Medicare?  They should be telling you what is going wrong.
You are getting confused about the Part A and Part B.  You only need to know that the patient does have Part B coverage.  You use the only Medicare ID they have no matter the letter or letters on the end of the number.
If the denial states name and ID do not match, make sure the name is entered on the claim exactly as it appears on the ID card.  If a middle initial is on the card, use it.  Spelling has to be exact.
