It appears that most billers that submit questions on this forum are doing coding as well as billing for their clients. Do you offer this an additional service ?

Actually, in my opinion, most billers do not do coding. We do seem to get several coding questions. It is good to know some coding, but I don't code for my providers. I will assist them if they are unsure what they should be coding by pointing them to possible codes but it must be their decision on the final codes. I am not a certified coder and I don't have the patient's chart in front of me, and I wasn't in the room. If I did coding it would be a separate service from the billing.

I agree with Michele, I think it's the norm for billers to leave the coding in-house, not only is it a bigger liability on billing companies, it's a bigger liability for provider's since outsourcing coding means the charts are leaving the office. IMHO, all coding should be done in the office by either a CPC or provider.

We do offer coding services to our providers. Our clients have small practices with no office staff or assistants--we are their back office. We give them the basic coding guidelines (midwives only use a handful of codes), but let them know that if they are ever unsure, they can send the charts to us and we will code from the chart. We have certified coders on staff.

I was going to hire a CPC and IF the provider wanted coding I was going to do same thing, have the client send charts and then have coder work only from those charts.. well it wasn't worth it for the jump in insurance premium's and you certainly don't want to offer this w/out making sure your E&O is up-to-date and covers your a--!!
