Question
Hi Alice,
I work for a long term care pharmacy in Ohio.  I enter physician’s orders and create the medical records that our facilities use.

I recently received a request from one of our facilities to change the wording on their enteral feed orders.

Instead of the order reading “continuous”, they said they were instructed by their medicare billing company to word the tube feed order “24 hours per day”.

Jevity 60cc/hour via g-tube 24 hours per day.

We were told it was necessary for medicare billing.

I cannot find any documentation on this subject indicating this is a rule. I have asked the facility that has made this request, but they have yet to provide me with anything.

Can you help point me in the right direction as to where I could find this information and other related rules for reimbursement for Ohio Long Term Care Facilities.  I want to make sure we are in compliance.

Thanks.

Answer
Michelle,
I would recommend that you contact Medicare directly with your question.  Even if the facility requesting the change gets back to you, it would be better for you to hear it directly.  I would try their website

http://www.palmettogba.com/palmetto/palmetto.nsf/TemplateNoSlash/Providers%20Part%20B%20Carrier%20Ohio?OpenDocument

or even call and ask a customer service rep.

Provider Contact Center
1-877-567-9232 (Toll-Free)
FAX (614) 473-6805
TTY 1-877-391-9739

I know with NY Medicare they are very helpful when you call with a question and will not only answer the question but direct you to the source.
