: Newbie Trying to start up

Hi Everyone

I have 8 years in the medical field and 4 years as a medical biller and coder and processing claims at my job.  I have confidence that I can do this myself from home. The type of business that I work for we bill durable medical equipment for DME providers to Medicare, Medicaid and all private insurancesand we do 47 states, and that is what I would like my own business to consist of.   I am not trying to jump into all states at one time. I will like to stick to my home state, Missouri and branch out when I am able to handle more or just stick one state. What software would you guys suggest? I will appreciate all feedback. Thanks in advance
 :)

Well... I always say.. if you can bill DME.. you can bill anything <g>
Don't limit yourself however if you plan to start your own business. JMO!

Really? So DME is "harder" than others?  I didnt know that.  That is the only experience that I have but would love to branch out.  Do you have any recommendations for software?

another DME biller............welcome!!! 47 states U go. What part of DME do you bill? I am mostly  Custom Rehab.  Also the software is different from DME and medical.

At my current job, we bill anything from a walker up to a bariatric hospital bed we also do oxygen, cpaps, and bipaps.

Some will say it's not harder, some will say it is, but I think it's more tedious and there are way more regs to keep up with not to mention tracking the CMN's.
As far as software goes, this is an iffy subject because I do know DME billers who use a lower end software like Medisoft who will claim it works great and then I know billers who need to have a specific software just to file DME.

depends on what you are billing with DME. We can send the electronic CMN and add the required narratives for repairs and labor with DME software, but since its not needed for Medical billing, its not added. This is the basic difference that I have seen, otherwise you can interchange them. Not all DME requires Difs or CMN's

You are more than welcome, it feels good to have another DME biller in here. I feel so alone sometimes :-(

Hey Charlene,
Can DME be done as easily on any PM system, or is it better to have one tailored to DME?  You were so excited to see another DME biller you missed the question on the software!  LOL, just kidding!  I do a little DME and it works fine on my PM system, but since you do more I thought you would be better suited to answer.

Thanks
Michele

Michelle, I actually did reply to her question regarding software. I just don't "recommend" any particular one since I never know the specifics on what a person needs. I generally agree to GO WEB BASED!! Thats my basic criteria. Yes you can bill DME out of any PM software however you do come across other issues.  There are specifics required for certain DME equipment that DME software addresses. We are required to attach narratives for repairs and labor, and also send the CMN to Medicare. When dealing with commercial insurance the PM software works just fine. A narrative is also required for any K0108 codes. The narrative must include the description of the item, mfg name, retail prices, brief statement of medical necessity. If the code does not have an allowable you have to send a narrative (e2399, e2609 etc) Replacement parts/repairs have to include the hcpcs code of the type of chair, the date w/c was purchased/ who purchased it. Labor you must include amount of time being billed, hcpcs code of chair being repaired, date wc was purchased. We also have the recurring orders (rentals) that have to be entered. This is something that DME software has built in specifically. Also the ability to send the CMN's, print the Physicians order. Here is a link to one of the DME software programs that I use. Look at the screen shot for orders. http://teamdme.com/  Now like most PM software programs they offer features that may not be needed with Billing Services. I don't want scheduling, don't plan to do scheduling for any provider. TeamDME also offers inventory (specific to the provider, not the biller) I have been looking for a PM software program that would actually allow me to do fully DME billing. The system I am using now, I am working with them in regards to upgrading the capabilities to do full DME.

Billing for a walker, cane, or even shoes is DME billing, but when you get into custom Rehab, Power mobility, beds etc. the requirements are different.

I would like to know what type of software she uses now, and has she ever seen medical billing software.

Hi Charlene,

Sorry it took a while for me to respond. The system that we use at work is Pacware/Pacwin. It is not web based at all.  Sometimes it is hard to send to commercial electronically so we have to end up sending paper

The DME billing company I worked for used Zirmed to do their billing.  Its web based so I could work from home on weekends.  It took me less than 5 minutes to learn how to use it.

A bariatric bed.  Isnt that one that measures air pressure to do weather forecasts???   ;D

Oh, Charlene is the DME expert. The DME company hired me for my appeals and AR recovery expertise. I couldnt do normal DM billing if my bariatric weather bed depended on it.
