VOIP Recommendations
« on: October 15, 2013, 02:06:57 PM »
I am thinking about using a Voice Over Internet Phone for my calls to insurance companies regarding claims and benefits because the amount of calls I am making is eating up my minutes on my cell. I am on the phone most days for at least half a day.

Does anyone have any thoughts about the VOIP's available or their effectiveness?

Thank you,
Barbara

VOIP is digital.  Your voice goes just like any typing or digital image you send.  It is bits and bytes.  It can be intercepted.  Therefore, standard VOIP is not HIPPA compliant.

For calls that don't need to be compliant, we use MagicJack Plus.  Dongle plugs into a wall socket.  Phone plugs into the dongle.  Thirty dollars a year.  Works like a charm - but that also depends on the reliability of your ISP.

I have to agree with Richard on this. I don't use my VOIP (Vonage) for business calls. I have a dedicated line. Get a landline, it's your best bet for security. VOIP is also not really reliable.. it's like satellite TV.. JUST not there yet with reliability.

I'm not pushing MagicJack - but we only have problems when there is a problem with the Internet Service Provider, which is rare.  When the ISP is good, the VOIP works like a charm.

I use OOMA..just love that name. Had it for years. Obviously depends on the quality of your  Internet service. You just purchase the appliance (Costco about $130) and I have no phone bills at all since I was grandfathered in and do not have to pay the taxes. Otherwise, your bill should be about $5 a month. Free long distance. I have a Premier service ($99 a year) so that I can call Canada but it also gives me another phone number etc. Could not be happier and I have no financial interest. Check out the reviews on Amazon. They will even port over your present number for a few dollars.
