Online Medical Billing Study Course
« on: October 17, 2013, 12:00:57 PM »
Wow!  We did it!  Our first three online courses are available now on www.medicalbillingstudycourse.com

Introduction to Medical Billing
Understanding Coding and Modifiers
Life Cycle of a Health Insurance Claim

The remaining courses will be following shortly!

We are so excited to be able to offer online courses to people interested in entering this field.  It has always been our desire to help others since we couldn't find much help out there.  The books, forum and newsletter are great but the one area we hadn't been able to help with was actual teaching how to do medical billing.  Now with our online courses we are also able to help with that.

Thank you all for your support and kind words.  You all are what make this community so great!

Just finished Unit 1 of Lifecycle of an Insurance Claim from A Step Above. It is an informative resource and provides detailed guidance on what to look for in registering a new patient. The exams are thorough and provide valuable reinforcement. ;D.

Hello Merry, I wanted to know is Medical terminology and anatomy
required for Medical Billing? I also took that at the school I attended.
What's so funny was when I volunteered at the 2 billing companies I was taught
something totally different than what was taught at the school I had attended.
During my time there one of the owners told me that what I was taught
During my studies was not necessary because Medical Billing isn't that
complicated.

Kinlaw30,

While I don't agree with the statement that "Medical Billing isn't that complicated" I sooooooo agree with "what I was taught during my studies was not necessary".  We have too hired several people fresh out of medical billing school.  We suggested to a couple of them that they ask for their money back.

Seriously, it is amazing the amount of stuff they teach that is not needed and the amount of stuff that they don't teach that needs to be learned.  That is the MAIN reason that we decided to develop our own course.  I know this is sounding like a commercial and I don't mean it to.  It's just that as a billing service and an employer it is frustrating to see people spend their money to learn something and see it be a waste.  To me it's like the medical billing opportunity scams that ran rampant in the early 90's.  They are just taking people's money.  Most of these courses are developed by people who have never done billing or haven't done in for many years.  This industry is constantly changing.  Doing billing 20 or more years ago does not make you an expert today.

True story:  Recently hired employee who paid $9000 for medical billing school.  She did not know what a truncated diagnosis code was after completion of the course.  She also did not know that you need to code to the highest level of specificity.

I'm with Michele on this one!!

Medical terminology..BASICS is a good thing to have. HEALTH INSURANCE TERMINOLOGY is a must. Whoever told you "Medical Billing is not that complicated" may not necessarily be WRONG..but it's certainly not accurate. Truth is.. it's like any other business you want to start.. you wouldn't try to start a pizza place w/out never having made or learned how to make a pizza, <g>.  You have to do your own research on what would be easy, complicated or not too difficult. Also you don't mention if your looking to learn to start your business, work at an office etc. That does make a difference. I always suggest getting some hands on in a doctors office for the real deal. There is a lot of fluff in many of the courses out there so you do have to do your research on what is right for you. If I had it to do all over again, I'd learn the basics but I'd make sure the biggest focus was on regulations, laws, and current trends and less "fluff".   Many of the university courses and association courses out there either have to much "fluff" or they are extremely basic. I agree with Michelle and PMRNC. Went to the medical billing online course. Paid about 900.00. All they taught was application and a the basic flow of an Insurance claim. I did the class in about 3 weeks. Then when I got into the real world. Nothing. There was so much more than what I was taught.  Most places where I interviewed said they would rather have someone from a medical practice office then from the Medical Billing online courses. The have more of a practical understanding of the overall process of medical billing.  I have learned so much more from this forum then the whole medical billing course. Volunteering in a provider's office is the best way to gain experience.

That is exactly why we wrote the online course at medicalbillingstudycourse.com. We had only one focus. To make this the most complete course that we could, we continuous updates. We knew what was out there and we are committed to the student rather than the pocket.

I tell people all of the time..Remember when you had your first job. You  were nervous and you had little knowledge but you learned just from working with others. Medical billing works the same way. The difference with the course is that you can go to a doctor's office and understand what they are saying. You will have those aha moments. Like, oh that is why I learned about ICD-9,10 coding and sending appeals to insurance carriers. It is sad that companies are charging $25,000 to "teach" you medical billing when all they teach you is how to market..But I will always say..you are marketing yourself..and you have to have the knowledge..how else can you market your service.
