Box for Referral?

Hi so this is probably a silly question but I have never had to deal with referrals before. How do you put them on the claim? Do you just put the referring physician's name and NPI in box 17 and then the referral number in box 23 where you put an authorization number? Thank you for your help!

referring physician name goes on line 17 and their npi in box 17b.  authorization number, if any, goes on box 23.
