Ortho MD with PT employee's
« on: January 31, 2012, 02:34:08 PM »
the following question was asked of me since I bill for physical therapy.  I do not know the answer - maybe someone else does.

Question:  An ortho physician contracts with/employs physical therapists and bills incident to his services.  Can that same ortho physician practice accept patients of outside physicians who prescribe PT services and bill for the PT services (obviously not incident to billing) even if not seeing those patients?  If so, how would the ortho physician bill for such PT services?

If the therapy is being billed under the therapists name (but with the ortho dr's billing EIN/NPI) then yes, they can do PT prescribed by other drs.  It would just be billed as any other PT but with the ordering/referring physician info in 17 and the date last seen (for Medicare).
