CODING FOR MEDICARE
« on: August 18, 2010, 12:35:36 PM »
Does anyone know how and if Medicare will pay for family therapy for longer than 1 hour?

If you are referring to code 90846 or 90847, the description of the code does not contain a time.  They do pay for 90808 which is individual therapy for over one hour.

OK,   I know that BCBS will cover 90847 with 2 units.      Medicare however will not pay this code with 2 units.   Is there anyway possible to get paid by medicare for this code and units?  Is there maybe a modifier that I don't know about?

Since the CPT code is not time restrictive you could charge your regular fee, but no Medicare is not going to cover more than their allowable for one session on same day. If you have a Medicare patient in group setting it's best to schedule the hour sessions on 2 separate dates.
