Medicare enrollment waiting period
« on: August 04, 2014, 05:37:42 PM »
I have a client who is starting a new practice and wants me to help her with Medicare credentialing.  During the enrollment process (90-120 days), is she allowed to treat Medicare patients or does she have to wait until the application is accepted, understanding she runs the risk if Medicare denies her enrollment?  If she does treat now, I assume we'll have to wait to bill the charges until the app is accepted.  Thanks for your help

We are able to get Medicare enrollment from date of enrollment/app. Not before of course.

Us too, date of app is usually what it ends up being.

Medicare will back date enrollment to 30 days prior to the receipt of the enrollment application.  They do this because you are allowed 30 days to notify Medicare.  So for example, if you send in an application today, August 6th, and it's received by the MAC on August 9th, then they will back date the enrollment to July 10th (if that date is what is on the form).  If you submit asking for an enrollment date of July 1st, and they receive it on August 10th, they will only go to July 10th, not July 1st.

Yes the provider can see Medicare patients of course knowing that if the application is denied or closed they lose out.  Billing must be held until the application is complete.

Thanks Everyone.  I talked with another biller who confirmed what Michele said - provider can back-date to 30 days prior to receipt of app.  Also, the provider can treat prior to being officially enrolled, but must wait until then to submit the bills.
