adding color flow and dopplers to ultrasound
« on: March 18, 2010, 04:46:42 PM »
I have a friend that work for IDTF for ultrasounds.  They add 93325 and 93320 to all their ultrasounds.  I mean all of them.  CDS, Venous....ABI.  I told my friend that it was my understanding those codes were reserved for echo's.  The other studies are complete codes...meaning already bundled to include the color flow and the doppler.  We know that the echo is bundled now so we don't see 93325 or 93320 used very often.  I was in a seminar that stated that you can used 93325 and 93320 on an echo 93303 for congenital heart defects.  BTW they only use these add on codes for private insurances as we know that Medicare won't pay.   Am I losing my mind or is this wrong.  I've read her the definitions of the ICD-9's.

What are your thoughts.

It doesn't sound correct to be adding them to all ultrasounds.  By description they specify echocardiography.  Also, if they are only adding them to private insurances since they know Medicare won't pay, that is wrong too.  If they get audited, they will be facing some trouble.

That's what I have been saying to her.  Her boss makes her appeal all the privates that disallow the color flow and doppler.  It's crazy....and some privates pay.    Thanks for confirming that I'm not out of my mind.

thanks again.
