I have a doc who asked me to check out an NPI number. He was asked by a licensed health care clinic in Florida to reassign his benefits to Medicare. When I checked out the NPI TYPE 2 number it shows being a Single Specialty Group with license number of a health care
clinic. The clinic has no doctor ownership. It appears to me that this would be a group practice with doctor ownership NPI.  Can a lay
person owned clinic even get an NPI number or be enrolled in Medicare?

a non-medical provider can own a clinic and obtain an NPI, however they MUST have a medical director on staff.  ...all similar to a DME provider.
