Certifications and Associations
« on: July 07, 2009, 02:26:30 PM »
As a newbie, it is very overwhelming and confusing the amount of associations available to become a member of...is there a industry standard that I should be attemting to become a part of?  It is hard to distinguish which are legitimate and which are not...does anyone have any opinions as to which ones that are good to join?  the same goes for any certs available?  How important is it to be certified???

As always, I appreciate the input and responses!  This is a wonderful community to be a part of

I know it can be overwhelming. My personal advice is to look at what is offered and how it will benefit your business.
Certification can be helpful but only as helpful as the course/exam given and the knowledge that is absorbed. It personally does no one any good when you see vendors or other associations advertising "NATIONAL CERTIFICATION" when indeed there is no such thing. Their mis-use of that angers me. You have to assess and take in exactly what you are getting for your money. Focus on the benefits and not the misuse and abuse of advertising certification.

I guess you just answered the bigger questions which was is there a "recognized" cert/association that would be beneficial....I feel like attending a seminar would be helpful but as far as subscribing to a website bc they say they can certify you, it seems as if this would be a waste of time and energy.  Thanks for your input.

I can give you a whole list of things that anger me about associations and vendors and misleading people..but by far that one gets under my skin. If you type in Google:  National Medical Billing Certification  tell me what you come up with.
A vendor or an association promising that with THEIR course (which will be extra $$) you will receive national certification.

Please don't get me wrong. I am NOT knocking certification in and of it's "own" but a consumer should know the truth and they should be able to shop around for the BENEFITS of what is offered rather than being misled.  A certification can be a BIG benefit to you as long as the course/exam was worthy of it. Just those letters after your name will NOT mean much to the doctors who's income will be determined by YOU. It all comes down to what you LEARN, the certification status is just a bonus.
