Do patient portals help in patient engagement and medical care?

Not sure what you mean.  Are you referring to PMS systems having patient portals?

I use a patient portal for myself for the physicians that are on that particular system. I love it. I get my labs and can email my doctors and get responses right away. It is protected..as secure as anything is today and I find it very convenient.

Yes, I think so. As a patient I really like to have my appointment email reminders, and being able to access labs is nice. From a provider standpoint it's not as useful, but being able to offer it to patients is definitely a plus especially because people are more involved in their own health care history and research these days.

I agree.  It may take a while for some patients to catch on but it is definitely the direction we are headed.  Everybody uses their phone, ipad, surface or whatever to do just about everything these days.  I think that these patient portals will only help.  It will definitely reduce the number of phone calls "what time is my appointment?"   :)  I live in a rural area and we don't have any doctors yet that use them so I wasn't sure that's what you meant.
