: Practice switching billing companies
: DavidZ December 21, 2009, 01:34:47 PM
Have a potential client, not having a good time with the current billing company and would like to switch. The problem here is that there is a contract and the practice doesn't have a copy of it.
What to do?

If the swich does through, what should the process be?

Thanks,

David

A copy of the contract is crucial for the provider to make sure he doesn't break anything in the contract.  And that is his problem, not yours.  Make sure you are careful to advise him to get a copy of the contract.

This is what you do in that situation.. NOTHING. Stay completely OUT of the contractual relationship of the provider and the other billing company. I've taken over quite a few practices and I will NOT interfere at all, not even to give advice, the providers office should seek legal representation for any problems they have with the old company. My contract starts ONLY with the date of service specified and anything prior to that is NOT my business. I make sure my contract is air tight. Above all I always try to give the benefit of the doubt in these situations so as not to become involved in something that might be a pattern .. I analyze the situation.. I have had providers who were on their 3rd billing company and I have to ask myself why.. I might simply refuse the client depending on the situation. I will not call, communicate or have anything to do do with the previous company, in fact I also tell the provider I do not want to even know who they are, anything that prevents me from going into the account unbiased is not recommended.

Yes, some could be difficult.
What preventive measures have to be taken if the practice is still in contract and you are not told and you take it over?

That doesn't effect you.  The contract is between the provider and the previous billing service.  You should advise him that you cannot be involved, and he should check his contract with them.
