Insurce Companies
« on: August 25, 2014, 04:57:35 PM »
Hi!

My name is Tammy and I am a brand "new" newbie. My question is - does anyone know where I can find a list of health insurance companies in NY and if you are a NY resident do you have to be enrolled in a NY state insurance plan?

I hope that made sense to someone...

Thanks!
Tammy   :)

Hi Tammy-

For your question about a list of NY state health insurance companies, I don't have one, but I suggest Googling to find one.

For your question about NY residents having to having to be enrolled in a NY state insurance plan...not sure what you mean here...for instance, there are people in NY state that work for companies that are headquartered out of state, and their insurance plans are offered through an insurance company that is out of state, like Anthem BCBS. So I need clarification on that point.

Also a "state insurance plan" could mean a few things these days. That could refer to Medicaid,  plans for states with their own exchange set up (e.g. Kynect for Kentucky, MNSure for Minnesota) instead of the healthcare.gov exchange, or simply plans based in the state a person resides in. There are also plans that cover people who normally go out of their own state for work. People like truck drivers, or salespeople often have plans with major insurance companies that provide benefits in most metro areas of the country.

You can probably find a list of the most common insurance companies that administer plans in NY, but keep in mind there may be a very small number of plans through companies that don't have a lot of business in the state. There are also third party administrator companies like Multiplan that offer discounted plans administered by the major insurance companies.
