How do you answer a potential client when they ask for references or want to know how long you've been doing this, when you are just starting out and have no clients yet?

I gave the following references to a provider I signed in April

The Manager of the Hospital where I worked as a Team Leader

Michelle Rimmer, the President of the Association that I belong to (PMBA)

A co-worker of a practice that I billed for specific to optometry (provider I signed)

A friend who worked with me previously

A client that I currently bill for,.

As I stated.......I got the client..

If you have no current clients, Charlene's suggestion is a good one.  Use references that will support your knowledge.  Be honest with the provider if he/she asks specifically who you are billing for.  But you can say I'm not currently billing for anyone because I just started my own company, however I have xx years experience billing and I can give you references that can verify my experience.  Also advise them that since you will only be billing for them initially you will be able to devote your full attention to their account.

Best wishes!
