Multiple Billers
« on: September 27, 2012, 02:47:40 PM »
Hi All,

I'm in the process of  getting my first client which is a Medical Transportation Company. But before they can switch over to me, they want to test few claims and if everything goes well then they will transfer all the work to us. My question is:

1. Can mulitple billing companies bill for same Client/provider using same NPI/UMPI and sent to HealthPartners(or any other carrier)?
2. What are the things I need to ask the potential client?

Thanks,

Mustafe

It really depends on the carrier, but I would not recommend it.  Are they doing the billing inhouse and considering outsourcing?  If that's the case maybe they would be willing to let you start with one line of their business.  For example, you submit allof the HealthPartners claims and they continue the others until they are sure they want to transfer all.

Personally I do not like when a provider wants to do this.  I know they want to take it slow, test out the waters, but that really doesn't work for the billing service.  It's a lot of work to get an account running.  If you are new and starting out obviously you've got more to consider.  You need to get started and experience is the best way.

I'm with Michele on this, why should you take on all the liability so they can "test the waters" If your contract has a fair out clause there shouldn't be a problem if they are unhappy. I don't believe you can have multiple submitter numbers either way.   I always recommend if you are doing a trial period with a client they still should sign all the appropriate contracts and BA Agreements and clearinghouse paperwork. So long as your contract has a sufficient out clause for either party there should be no problem.
